Dr. Alvin L. Smith is a NASA project leader advancing planetary exploration through sample return missions, planetary protection, and human exploration strategy. He leads efforts to prepare for the safe receipt and study of samples from Mars and other restricted planetary bodies while helping shape NASA's future exploration architecture. Drawing on expertise spanning biodefense, high-containment science, and flagship space missions, he supports the development of biological planetary protection frameworks, human safety models, and integrated Moon-to-Mars exploration strategies.
